Supportive Measures

TIX Support Infographic

Supportive measures are available to protect reporting individual, as necessary, during the University’s Title IX investigation (e.g., no contact order; change academic or living situations as appropriate with minimum burden on reporting individual; counseling; health and mental health services; escort services; academic support; retake a course or withdraw without penalty) and sources of counseling, advocacy, and support from the Dean of Students Office.

Interim steps will be taken promptly, and at no cost to the reporting individual, and the University will continue to take these steps if sexual violence is found to have occurred.

The preponderance of the evidence standard of proof will be used for investigating and adjudicating Title IX complaints.

No Contact Order

No Contact Orders (NCOs) are issued as protection for you and the other student against further negative incidents. You are prohibited from initiating any contact with the other party involved in this incident.

If you are in a public space at which the person requesting this no contact order is present, it is your responsibility to remove yourself from that situation. Additionally, you are prohibited from contacting the other party’s friends or family members to discuss the other party listed in the NCO.

Failure to comply with this directive may result in further disciplinary action including, but not limited to, immediate suspension from Syracuse University on an interim basis.

The University uses various interim relief methods to ensure the safety of the reporting individual:

  • Supportive measures such as no-contact orders, changes in living, working, and/or academic situations, protective escort services, and referrals to counseling may be provided as requested.
  • Interim relief can be sought without regard to whether the impacted person chooses to file a complaint with the University or with local law enforcement.
  • Additional relief such as protective orders may be available through the criminal and/or family court process.

For example, the affected person might want some interim relief such as a no contact order, class or work schedule adjustment, or an educational conversation with the alleged offender.

Contacting the reporting individual through any of the following is prohibited under an NCO:

  • Face-to-face contact
  • Sending messages through friends
  • Sending messages by anyone else
  • Writing and leaving notes
  • Calling by telephone
  • Leaving messages
  • Instant messages (IM)
  • Facebook or other social networking sites
  • Texting
  • Sending emails
  • Any other electronic means; or
  • Any other non-electronic means

REMEMBER: Students found to be responsible for violations of this policy are at risk for expulsion from the university. Students found responsible for violence-related violations, as defined by the Clery Act, who are suspended or expelled will have their University transcripts issued with a notation of a code of conduct violation.
